What Apple's Biggest Event in Years Means for How We Plan
So I had the keynote on in the background this morning.
Today marked John Ternus's first keynote as Apple's CEO, and Apple used it to do something it hasn't done in almost twenty years: change the shape of the iPhone.
The headline: iPhone Duo
Apple's first foldable is here, and it's called the iPhone Duo. It opens up book style into something that looks a lot more like a small iPad than a phone. Starting price is $1,999, climbing to around $3,000 if you want the top storage tier, and it ships in October in dark blue or white.
Here's the part that made me sit up though: it supports Apple Pencil.
If you've ever wanted to jot down a quick sketch, mark up a PDF, or scribble a to-do list without digging your iPad out of your bag, a Pencil-compatible screen that actually lives in your pocket is a real new category, not just a bigger phone with a fold in it. I don't think it's replacing an iPad for a real planning session anytime soon. But for catching an idea the second it shows up? This might be the closest thing yet to always having your notebook on you.
The quieter update: Siri and Apple Intelligence
Apple also moved its Siri AI and Apple Intelligence features forward, and it got a lot less stage time than the foldable did. But honestly, this is the layer that touches your actual day. Quicker capture, better search across your notes and files, more hands free ways to get something out of your head and into a system you'll actually use. I'll be keeping an eye on this one, because software updates like this tend to change how we work more than any single piece of hardware ever does.

For my fellow iPhone 15 Pro owners
I'm sitting here with my own iPhone 15 Pro wondering if this is finally the year, so I actually ran the numbers on what upgrading would get me.
iPhone 15 Pro, what I have now
Chip: A17 Pro, Apple's first 3nm chip
Camera: 48MP main, 3x optical telephoto
Modem: Qualcomm
Apple Pencil: not supported
Storage ceiling: 1TB
Starting price: $999 at launch
Siri AI and Apple Intelligence: already supported, since the A17 Pro was the original minimum chip
iPhone 18 Pro
Chip: A20 Pro, first 2nm chip, faster CPU cores, next gen vapor chamber for cooling
Camera: 48MP main with a mechanical variable aperture, the first on any iPhone, opens wider for about 50% more light in low light
Modem: Apple's own C2, about 50% faster than the last generation
Apple Pencil: not supported
Storage ceiling: 2TB, a first for iPhone
Starting price: $1,199
Siri AI and Apple Intelligence: supported, plus the top tier on device model, which needs 12GB of memory and is limited to iPhone 17 Pro, Pro Max, and iPhone Air
iPhone Duo
Chip: A20 Pro
Camera: foldable form factor, camera specs mirror the Pro line
Modem: Apple's own C2
Apple Pencil: supported, first time on an iPhone
Storage ceiling: 2TB
Starting price: $1,999
Siri AI and Apple Intelligence: supported
The good news, my 15 Pro already qualifies for Siri AI and Apple Intelligence in iOS 27, since it has that A17 Pro chip. I'll miss out on the fanciest on device voice model, which is locked to the 17 Pro and newer, but that's a small loss. So the AI layer alone isn't pulling me toward an upgrade. It's the camera's variable aperture and that new C2 modem that would genuinely be new for me.
Should you upgrade
If your planning setup lives across iPad and iPhone the way mine does, I'd let the first wave of real world reviews land before deciding anything, especially on a first generation foldable. But if you've been holding onto an older iPhone specifically because you wanted more screen for note taking on the go, the Duo is the first device that actually makes you ask the question seriously.
